Cregagh, Belfast.

This War Memorial Celtic Cross is in Thiepval Avenue, Cregagh and is the war memorial of the Cregagh district. Thiepval Avenue is in the centre of an ex-Servicemens’ colony (housing estate). The avenue is named in memory of one of Ulster’s greatest fights in the war and the Cross is a simple yet solemn memory of those who gave their lives for Ulster and the Empire.

All the avenues in the ‘Colony’ are named after battles in which the 36th Ulster Division fought (Somme, Bapaume, Albert, Picardie).

This is memorial has been unveiled twice. Initially it was unveiled by Right Hon. J. M. Andrews. D.L., M.P. A few years later in was also unveiled by the Prince of Wales.

The Celtic Cross is now accompanied by five other memorials. (See below for images.)


	This plaque was erected by Castlereagh Borough Council as a memorial to the following residents of this “Colony” who made the supreme sacrifice in the Second World War.
